-Italian fashion label founded by Gianni Versace in 1978.

-Gianni Versace was born in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, where he grew up with his older brother Santo and younger sister Donatella, along with their father and dressmaker mother, Francesca. An older sister, Tina, died at the age of twelve from an improperly treated tetanus infection.

-Versace began his apprenticeship at a young age, helping his mother find precious stones and gold braid with which to embroider dresses.

-He studied architecture before moving to Milan at the age of 25 to work in fashion design.

- Versace presented his first signature collection for women at the Palazzo della Permanente Art Museum of Milan.

-Versace met his companion Antonio D'Amico, a model, in 1982. The couple embarked on a long-term relationship that lasted 11 years, until Versace's untimely death. During that time Antonio worked as a designer for the company, becoming head designer for Istante and Versus Sport.

-Versace was shot dead on July 15, 1997, aged 50, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion as he returned from his customary morning walk on Ocean Drive. His murderer was Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer who used the same gun to commit suicide on a boat shortly afterwards.

-Versace's body was cremated and his ashes returned to the family's estate near Cernobbio, Italy.

-In September 1997, it was announced that the new CEOs of the Versace company would be Gianni's brother Santo Versace and Jorge Saud. Gianni's sister, Donatella Versace, became the new head of design.

-In his will, Gianni Versace left 50 percent of his fashion empire to his niece Allegra Versace, daughter of Donatella. Her younger brother, Daniel, inherited Gianni's vast rare artwork collection. Allegra inherited this stake, worth around half a billion dollars, when she turned 18 in 2004. She has the final say in the Versace clothing line.

-Versace was awarded the American Fashion Oscar on February 1, 1993.

-Elton John dedicated his 1997 album The Big Picture to Versace.

- In July 2007, a specially-written ballet was performed in La Scala, Milan, Italy to mark the 10th anniversary of the fashion designer's death. Thanks Gianni, With Love was put together by French choreographer Maurice Bejart, for whom Versace designed many stage costumes.

-At age 25, Versace was creating prêt-à-porter collections for top fashion houses of the time, including Genny, Complice and Callaghan.

-Also in 1994, Versace published "Designs" the English version of his book, "Vanitas - Ricami e Decori - Decori e Ricami."

-In 1995 the first Versus fashion show was held in New York. That year, Versace sponsored the Haute Couture exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as Richard Avedon's "1944-1994," both of which met with great success.

-In 1992 Gianni Versace moved to Miami Beach, Florida and purchased a home at 1116 Ocean Drive formerly known as the Amsterdam Palace for $2.9 million.After receiving city approval to demolish the Revere Hotel next-door, a two-story, 6,100-foot addition was built transforming the entire structure into a palatial home which Versace named Casa Casuarina.

-Gianni Versace's initial connection with Miami, South Beach in particular, came when he designed the sensual T-shirt-and-pastel-jacket look for Miami Vice, a look that exuded a fresh style that would soon sweep the country and set the tone for a decade of wild and reckless living.
